Barir Durga Puja

Home » Barir Durga Puja

Barir Durga Puja literally translates as Durga Puja of the house. Durga Puja is mainly a community celebration. But years ago (especially before independence), this Hindu Bengali festival and religious custom was chiefly celebrated by rich landlords (Zamindars), and elite-class. Durga pooja was a part of the traditional household festival for these landlords. With the abolishment of Zaminadari system, the puja of Devi Durga in altars of the house ceased considerably. Only handful families celebrate this barir Durga puja in the 21st century.Barir Durga Puja, is a way to honor the eternal victory of the goddess, Maa Durga over demon Mahishasur.

Organizing these pujas has become associated with prestige and family honor now. Though a highly expensive affair, the present generation (who still celebrate Barir Durga puja) considers it a way to live up to the dreams and expectations of their ancestors. For these families, Devi Durga is the daughter of their own household. Every year during Durga Puja, Maa Durga comes back to her maternal family, and great celebrations are held.

Some particular families have been celebrating Barir Durga Puja, or Durga Puja of the house, for quite sometime. Few of these families belong to royal lineage and have been celebrating it for centuries. The most famous of these barir Durga puja are those of Bardhaman Rajbari (Burdwan District, West Bengal) and the puja of Debendra Bhaban, Borhat (Assam). The Dey family of Borsul, the Paschimpara Puja of Kachnagar and the Sunil Kumar temple of Durgapur has been celebrating this barir Durga pujo since about three centuries. These families belong to the royal lineage or from the high ancestry.

The barir Durga puja is not limited or restricted to the families of royal blood or high ancestry. Several other families too establish the Durga Idol in their houses and celebrate the Puja. They too have a similar reason – continuing the age-old family tradition and honoring their family lineage.
