Bhai Duj

Home » Bhai Duj

Bhai Duj or Bhaiya Duj is celebrated on the fifth day of Deepavali or Diwali. The name itself signifies that the festival it falls on Duj, which is the second day after the new moon. Bhai Duj is an age-old tradition and its origin is quite interesting. It is believed that on Duj ,Yamaraj had gone to his sister's house who had put an auspicious mark on his forehead for his welfare and long life. Hence, on this day sisters perform puja and offer prayers for the wellbeing and long life of their brothers. As a token of love and concern, brothers in return give gifts to their sisters.

Bhai-duj is celebrated in different places as Bhaiyya-Duj in Northern India, Bhav--Bij in the Marathi-speaking areas, Bhai Phota in West Bengal and in Nepal by the name of Bhai-Tika.

There is another version of Bhai- Duj which is also deep rooted in the age old beliefs. In many cultures, it is believed that after killing Narakasur, Lord Krishna, went to his sister Subhadra who welcomed him in the conventional way by doing his aarti and putting on his forehead a tilak symboloizing her sisterly protection.

Another myth behind this festival originates when Bhagawaan Mahavir discovered nirvana and his brother Raja Nandivardhan was depressed as he missed him and found solace by his sister Sudarshana. Since then, women have been honored during this festival of showering good wishes on brothers.
