Durga Puja is the largest festival of India. Associated with this festival and its celebration are the very favorite Durga Puja shopping of Bengalis. Traditionally, Durga puja is associated with new clothes. On those four days of Durga Puja, from Maha Saptami to Vijaya Dashami, one is supposed adorn themselves with new clothes. It is the time when Maa Durga is returning back to her maternal home with four cute little children. One decorates their home and their life with the most beautiful trinkets of love, joy and compassion. It is said that one should try to deck themselves and their loved ones with new clothes and only after that bow in front of Devi Durga.



One can see people buying new clothes for the occasion of Durga Pooja. Conventionally, the Bengali family completes their yearly clothes shopping during this time. An entire bundle of clothes are bought during this season. It is the most beneficial time to earn profits for businessmen. Clothes, Utensils, accessories are the main items purchased by people during this time. The sale of household and electronic goods also sees a huge leap.

To understand the importance of shopping during Durgotsav, all one has to do is to look into the markets and streets of Kolkata. The whole shopping fiesta starts around two months before the Pooja that is much before October- November. Buying clothes and other necessities seems like the only important activity for the Bengalis at that time.

It is definitely not a compulsion to wear new clothes or accessories during this time. Durga Pooja is all about community celebrations and community festivity. More than clothes it is the sentiments of heart, which matters the most. The entire Bengali family gathers together for this occasion and goes out for their shopping fête. This single largest festival is not only a cause for honoring the Goddess but also a cause for tremendous shopping.
