The festival of Dussehra also known as Vijayadashami is one of the most widely celebrated festivals of India. According to Ramayana, Lord Rama performed the chandi puja. This puja was performed to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga for killing Ravana. Ravana was the ten headed demon king of Lanka who had abducted Lord Rama's wife Sita. Dussehra celebrates this winning of good over evil and the end of the kingdom of Lanka.Goddess Durga gave Rama her blessings and showed the way on how he could slay the great Ravana. Lord Rama successfully slayed demon Ravana and along with younger brother Laxmana and wife Sita returned to his kingdom Ayodhya on the day that is called 'Diwali'.

All over northern India this scene is enacted in the form of Ramlila with actors dressed as Rama and the others.
Dussehra is considered one of the most auspicious days of the year. It is truly believed that any new work that is started on this day is surely to be successful. Hence, some of the most important beginnings are done on this day. Whether it is a new commercial establishment or a new job, Dussehra is the perfect day.
