Lakshmi puja takes place right after the durga puja for the Bengalis. The norths Indians celebrate Lakshmi puja during "Diwali". They purchase gold coins and utensils during this festival. This is the festival of wealth and prosperity. Even the business-men perform this puja in order to please Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Lakshmi is supposed to a white owl. The Lakshmi puja varies from one culture to another. When the gods and the demons churned the ocean for days and nights for "amrito" (a drink which is supposed to turn every one immortal), it was Goddess Lakshmi who came out with a jar of "amrito" or sacred drink.The Lakshmi puja takes place in the evening. The Bengali households prepare for the offering to Goddess Lakshmi. They cook vegetarian food for the god. The best thing about Lakshmi puja is "alpona".



It is similar to rangoli( a design with colors made in front of the main door). The fruits are also offered to Goddess Lakshmi. Before commencing the act of Lakshmi puja, Ganesha must be worshipped. There are a number of immigrants from Bangladesh who reside in west Bengal. These people are from different parts of Bangladesh. The "borisals" are supposed to offer hilsa to Goddess Lakshmi.

They even bring home the banana tree after washing her in the sacred water of the holy Ganges, the wife of Lord Ganesha. In the late afternoon, the custom of painting alpona begins. Alpona is made of dusts of rice, maida and water. The ears of corn are painted throughout the Bengali homes. Beside the ears of corn the little lakshmi feet are painted. The feet of Goddess Lakshmi is drawn to symbolize that God herself will enter every household at night. Along with the cooked food, Goddess Lakshmi is even offered coconut sweets and sweets made from puffed rice. In north India lakshmi puja occurs during diwali. It is during this Lakshmi puja, the business-men opens new business account.
