Dussehra is the celebration of victory of good over evil. It is a universally acknowledged fact that the celebration of Dussehra is void without Ramlila. Ramlila is a re-enactment to celebrate the 10-day battle fought between lord Rama and Ravana. Ramlila is a fest which is usually held in large open grounds with innumerable stalls, merry-go rounds, giant wheels, and lighting displays. Ramlila, basically an enactment of the epic, is depicted as a cycle-play with the story ranging from 7 to 31 days. The Ramlila performance is a much awaited event and creates a festive ambience and enables observance of religious rituals.

The essence of the enactment is enhanced by performance crafts such as colorful costumes, jewellery, masks, headgear,decoration and make up.
The festive spirit of Ramlila has transcended geographical boundaries, but if you want to feel the traditional essence of the festival, then visit Ramnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Ramlila in Ram nagar lasts for a month and the enactment is highlighted by meticulous dialogue and spectacular scenes.
Apart from the enactment, priests called ramayanis come to the town to watch and recite the epic marking the defeat of Ravana. Ramlila in Chitrakoot is observed for five days every year in the last week of February. The celebration begins from the Maha Shivratri day and it is believed that during the Bharat-Milap, an important lila, lord Rama himself comes and enacts in the epic. Hundreds and hundreds of devotees watch the enactment with joy. Ramlila is celebrated with immense eagerness and zeal at Varanasi. Jhankis and pageants presenting episodes from the life of Lord Rama are taken out.
